Mars Linear City

Mars Linear City (MLC) spans over hundreds of miles across the martian surface. It is composed of a sequence of cylindric modules arranged in a straight line. ¾ of it is buried under the surface, leaving the top ¼ exposed to the martian atmosphere.

MLC is the easiest and cheapest structure that can be built on the surface of Mars. Its cylindrical shape makes it easy to build using a combination of boring and slipform construction (concrete is poured into a continuously moving mold).

MLC can eventually span for thousands of kilometers on the surface of Mars. Each concrete module interior, the distribution, the inner building facades, can be customized to mimic any architectural style.

A semi-buried modular concrete structure like the one proposed here is also way safer than architectures based on glass domes or buildings. The fact that the modules are ¾ buried under martian soil provides a great radiation protection while allowing indirect natural light.

Up to 50 people can live comfortably in each of these modules. Building the 20 module structure that hosts 1000 people would take 20 months.

Linear cities in different latitudes

The largest linear city that can be built on the surface of Mars has to be located by the equator. The equator of Mars is 21,344 km, and each module is 72.7 + 6 = 78.7 m long (body of the module plus gap between modules). That gives us a total of 271,207 modules that can host 13,560,355 people, approximately the population of Tokyo.

If a high speed train runs in parallel to the structure, the farthest point, just on the other side of the planet can be reached in just 21 hours, assuming avg. speed of 500 km/h.

Each module is divided into 6 levels. Only the bottom level is directly connected among modules.

Transportation

Level 0 is the lowest level. It provides access to a transportation system among modules based on electric carts. These carts move along Level 0 but they double as elevators.

Street level

Level 0 is the “street” level. It connects modules through revolving doors that provide fast access. There are revolving doors connecting both ends of each module.

Elevators

Levels 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 are connected to an elevator tower that provides access to the transportation level (level 0) and among levels across modules. The elevator is actually a cart that once on Level 0 can move horizontally as well, communicating modules. The elevator tower can only be accessed through airlocks. There is one elevator tower servicing every 2 modules.
